A milestone

July 21, 2008 · Comments Off

This afternoon the Elections Department notified us that we have gathered 1,012 1,048 (with additional signatures turned in) qualified signatures-in-lieu which gives the campaign the full credit of $500 for ballot filing fees and means we have conducted our first successful grass roots campaign effort. Thank you to all my many friends and supporters who helped gather signatures – it feels like we have passed an important milestone on the road to winning a seat on the Board of Education.

I must be doing something right!

Today my daughter gave me a sealed remit envelope with some coins inside. When I opened it up, here’s how she had filled it out:

Campaigning definitely takes its toll on family life. So it’s nice to know I’m still doing something right!

SF Chronicle: Schools Overwhelmed by Autism

July 13, 2008 · 2 Comments

The San Francisco Chronicle has a major report today entitled “Autism Threatens to Overwhelm Schools.” I have some objections to some of the assertions in the article, but on the whole, Nanette Asimov got it right. Here is an excerpt from the letter to the editor I wrote in response:

(A)fter decades of underfunding from the state and Federal government, a focus on fighting parents rather than partnering with them, and a general failure to keep up with evidence-based practices, special education programs in many districts (including San Francisco) are in crisis. Parents are angry, teachers are overwhelmed, and students are getting less than they need.

The full letter is here.

Norton for School Board: The Video

July 8, 2008 · Comments Off

The campaign has put together a short promotional video that can be shared via YouTube and posted on a web site or blog. My objective is to introduce myself as a candidate, to talk about why I decided to run and discuss the issues that are important to me. Please take a look and share the video with friends you think would be interested in my campaign! My heartfelt thanks to BaseballRodent Productions’ Max Schreiber (Balboa HS ‘07) for his great work.
