Ready for tomorrow?

The agenda for the Feb. 1 Committe of the Whole is posted, and wow. It’s going to be quite a meeting. After the “curve ball” I wrote about in mid-January, staff is now planning to bring us a firmer proposal for middle school enrollment — but I’m the first to say that I really have no idea what they are going to show us tomorrow night.

In addition, we’re scheduled to discuss changes to transportation. I’ve heard from a few people who are waiting to turn in their Round I assignment requests until they hear this presentation, so I hope it has the detail they’re looking for. I have my doubts that it is going to be stop-specific; but hopefully they will at least let us know the routes that may be eliminated.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Board room at 555 Franklin St.; we have requested that SFG-TV stream it online.

Jan. 12 meeting preview

The agenda for Tuesday night’s Board meeting is posted.  Here are the highlights:

  • The Board will elect a new President and Vice President and re-adopt the Board’s Rules and Procedures for the 2010 year.  A proposal to modify the Board’s Rules and Procedures will also come before the Board for first reading.
  • The Board will consider a proposal from the Superintendent concerning the locations of the Cobb General Ed and Montessori programs.
  • The Board will hear an informational update on the new 9th grade Ethnic Studies course to be piloted at five high schools in 2010-11.
  • The Board will consider a proposal from the Superintendent to raise the threshold for administrative approval of contracts to $25,000 from the current threshold of $8,000.

Student assignment redesign: meeting Oct. 19

The agenda for the next meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on Student Assignment has been posted; the meeting will take place Monday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. in the Board room. Generally these meetings have been streamed at SFGov-TV so I would imagine this one will be as well, though I haven’t checked on that.

Sneak peek into tomorrow night’s agenda

Tomorrow night (Tues. Sept. 22) is the second regularly scheduled public meeting of the full Board for the month, so I spent much of the afternoon combing through the agenda. The Superintendent and staff like Board members to try and get specific questions in ahead of the actual meeting, so that they have time to answer them and resolve any issues before the actual meeting. No one is happy — Board members or staff — when questions asked at the public meeting can’t be answered because no one is prepared.

I have a number of consent calendar items I’ve already indicated I’ll be pulling tomorrow night–either because I think they need some Board discussion, or because I plan to vote against them, or because I need the staff to answer some questions before I decide how to vote.  On occasion, I pull something for discussion not because I am unsure of how I’ll ultimately vote, but because I want members of the public to hear the staff’s explanation of the item.
